SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Springfield Victory Mission says donations are the lowest it's seen in 12 years, and the organization is asking for help.

Victory Mission was founded 34 years ago, and today meets many immediate needs like food, shelter and clothing, but also offers several educational programs that help change lives.  If things don't improve, part of what it does will have to change.

The 150 beds at Victory Square remain full and more than 80 men and women are taking advantage of Victory Mission's educational programs, but the number of dollars to support it all is dangerously low.

"I just know when I look at my bank balance at Victory Mission right now, I need help from the community," said Executive Director Jim Harriger.

There's a 34-percent drop in donations for the first quarter, compared to last year.  Harriger knows they're not the only ones in need.

"It's difficult all over our community," Harriger said.

Its mission is to help people with their struggles, beat addictions, learn life and career skills, and grow in faith.

"It gave me an opportunity to sit back and look at myself.  It just gave me a time to get to know the Lord better and to settle down and think about things," said Walter Doxey.

Doxey went through one of Victory Mission's educational programs a few years ago, and has now been part of the staff for two years.

"I'm thankful every day," he said.

"The majority of the men who graduate here are still employed, working, giving back to their community and church.  That's victory; that's the success.  That's what we do in changing lives, and in a way, impacting the whole of our community," said Harriger.

Harriger says financial struggles could force Victory Mission's impact to change.

"While I don't know what the definitive answer is, it'll mean that we will have to figure out how to reduce the services that we offer to become something different than what we are today,"
