( Kansas Historical Society / September 14, 2011 ) Bob Dole was born in Russell. He was second lieutenant in the army during World war II and received a bronze star and purple heart. Dole served as a United States senator from 1969 to 1996 and was a two-time senate majority leader and minority leader. He was Gerald Ford's vice presidential running mate in 1976 and was the Republican presidential candidate in 1996. Dole received the American Patriot Award in 2004. |
