( Kerry Hayes / June 5, 2012 ) Long before MacLaine portrayed a fictional former first lady in 1994's "Guarding Tess," she made an impact on the Hollywood political landscape. MacLaine sued 20th Century-Fox for breach of contract when, after production of a film entitled "Bloomer Girl" was canceled, the studio tried to get her to sign on to another role (in "Big Country, Big Man"), and not pay her for the canceled film. MacLaine's rebuke of the offer and lawsuit led to an appeal by 20th Century-Fox to the Supreme Court of California in 1970. The Court ruled against Fox, and the result changed the way that studios dealt contractually with actors. |
