More students will ride Springfield buses this year

By Brett Onstott

SPRINGFIELD -- The Springfield School District says its buses will carry about 2,200 more students this year than they did the last school year. It's because of busy intersections like the one on National Avenue at Grand Street. The district says it had already started looking into bussing more kids to school before two little girls were hit while crossing that intersection last fall.

The district has added 14 new school buses to its fleet. Before this year, if an elementary or middle school child lived within a mile-and-a-half of his school, he wasn't eligible to take a bus. Now the district has changed its policy.

Children qualify for bus service this school year, even if they live within a mile-and-a-half of school, if they have to cross a barrier street. That's a street that carries more than 30,000 vehicles every day or which has a speed limit of at least 45mph. Parents should have received a postcard telling them when a bus will pick up their children.
