Opening of school doesn't slow drivers

By Gene Hartley

SPRINGFIELD -- During school days, drivers share the roads in mornings and afternoons with 25,000 Springfield School District students. On the first day of the 2007-08 school year on Thursday, KY3 News used a radar gun in a school zone next to Campbell Elementary to see how many drivers slowed down for the kids.

Between the kids with backpacks and lunchboxes, parents walking them to school, and crossing guards stopping traffic, the signs that school is back in session are clearly posted outside Campbell. While some drivers slowed down for school zones, others didn't even notice.

While police officers patrolled, KY3 News used its own radar gun to see how fast drivers blew through school zones. One driver was going 32mph before police stopped him. While the officer was writing him a ticket, a yellow truck flew by -- something that parents say happens often.

“It's kind of scary. They just fly like there's no school there!” said Amy Watts, a mother of a student at Campbell.

The city even posted signs so drivers could see their speeds. That only helps some drivers, however. Others still not only break the school zone speed but even the posted speed for the rest of Grant Avenue.

We asked one driver why he was speeding.

“I didn't even pay any attention,” he said. “I feel horrible. I didn't even know.”

And, even though parents may accept his apology, they don't trust him or other drivers on Grant.

“That's why I walk mine back and forth,” said Watts.

Drivers should remember that fines are double in school zones. Police also remind drivers to wash their windshields. They had at least one incident last year in which a driver hit a child because of the glare on her dirty windshield.
