New signs will improve visibility of school zones

By Paula Dowler

SPRINGFIELD -- City officials said Thursday that several elementary schools in the city will have new speed signs outside their buildings. Each sign will display the common "school speed limit" warning with a flashing yellow light on top.

A grant from the Missouri Department of Transportation's Safe Routes to School program is paying for the signs. The city and school district hope the new additions grab the attention of drivers better than the signs that don't flash.

Here are the elementary schools that will get the new signs and the streets where the signs will be:
Bissett - Calhoun Street
Bowerman - High Street
Cowden - Kimbrough Avenue
Field - Barataria Street
Field - Luster Avenue
Fremont - Fremont Avenue
Holland - Holland Avenue
Mann - Broadway Avenue
Twain - Weaver Avenue
Twain - Broadmoor Street
McGregor - Fort Avenue
Pershing - Seminole Street
Pittman - Bennett Street
Portland - Portland Street
Sequiota - Mentor Avenue
Watkins - Talmage Street
Weller - Weller Avenue
Wilder - Sunset Street
York - Nichols Street
