Flooding in homes keeps water removal companies busy

By Gene Hartley

SPRINGFIELD -- Experts say you have just 72 hours to dry a flooded basement before mold and mildew begins. Helping flood victims before that window closes has been a big challenge.

In a matter of 48 hours, Jennie Salazar's basement turned from a trusty asset to a costly liability.

It was her son her who first saw the water.

“It was 24-26 inches,” she said.

Now, she'll have to pay thousands to get the water out and repair the damaged walls and floor.

“Paint and drywall started to bubble,” said Salazar.

She is definitely not alone.

“This is the worst we've ever seen,” said Brett Prodie of MaxCARE Water Removal.

Prodie had to call in crews from Kansas City to help assist the growing list of flood victims, most of whom will have to pay out of their own pockets. Most people don’t have flood coverage in their insurance policies.

Many policies cover flooding but only if it's caused by a busted pipe or broken appliance. Salazar's policy -- and those of many others -- has an exception for flooding caused by rain and sump pump overflow.
