Thieves steal precious memories from storage unit with nonworking cameras

By Brian Vandenberg

SPRINGFIELD -- Storage and security are two reasons that most people rent a storage unit. But many are broken into each year, and you can't always count on security measures to help catch the thief.

Lonnie Nave's family is not only mourning the loss of him but also the loss of many memories of him as well. Nave died on Feb. 11 when the crashed into a railroad overpass on Kansas Expressway. He was just 39 years old.

Lonnie's mom, Alice, is just one of many loved ones who hoped for something to remember him by. But many of those mementos are now gone.

Shortly after his death, Lonnie's family moved his things into a storage unit until they settled his affairs. They chose Central Self Storage because its Yellow Pages ad says there's a security alarm and closed circuit television.

"We wanted to make sure no one could go in and out without being observed and it would be protected."

Despite these assurances, less than a month after they stored nearly all of her son's belongings, someone broke into the storage unit and stole thousands of dollars worth of memories. They asked for the security camera footage only to find out the closed circuit television system wasn't working at the time of the break-in.

A reporter went to Central Self Storage. An employee refused a request for an on-camera interview but confirmed, while the camera may have been on that night, the monitor to view the footage was broken and no employee was monitoring the facility.

When the reporter asked why there's a camera on site if the footage can't be monitored, the employee said it acts as a deterrent, and one that works. He says this is the first time in 13 years that there's been a break-in.

Alice doesn't care if this was the first or last time there's been a break-in; she just wants her mementos back.

"I felt like everything he worked for, stood for, was gone along with him being gone."

While there is not 24 hour surveillance, Central Self Storage does have a coded entry system. And the employee says the camera system is now working. He also pointed out that the the contract that all renters sign says the owner of the facility is not responsible for items lost or stolen.
