SPRINGFIELD -- A new Web site offering funding opportunities for consumers raises some eyebrows. They want to know whether it's too good to be true; they think it might be a scam.  Some of these questions have come into our newsroom.

The Web site in question, www.usagrantapplications.org, says billions of dollars in grant funds are available for people like you and me. All you have to do is sign up to locate and apply for them.  We found, however, that much of what's listed in this subscription service could be found free with just a little bit of research.

With billions of dollars available in stimulus money, it's easy to think there's something for you, too. Be careful. Despite what some Web site might imply, said Mike Cherry, director of Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Springfield, “Stimulus money is a long way from the individual.”

This Web site says it will help you find and apply for an array of grants available for individuals. We found it’s really just a database of Web sites that you can find yourself.

“It's basically a referral to tell you where to get help on utilities, help with small business. They're simply going to refer you to the (Small Business Administration) or the (Ozarks Area Community Action Corporation),” said Cherry.

Some of the links don't even exist. They just take you to a search engine of other subscription sites.

Www.usagrantapplications.org is not free; it costs $24.95 a month.

“It’s something you can do on your own that you do not have to pay fee for,” said Cherry.

There are some free Web sites. We found one at www.grants.gov.  It's administered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
