State and Springfield snow plowing efforts face budget constraintsby Cara Restelli, KY3 news

SPRINGFIELD -- While road workers work to keep you safe while behind the wheel this winter, they'll have to do so with a much slimmer budget.
"We're all prepared. Our salt supplies are in and ready to use; equipment will be ready to go,” said Bob Edwards, a spokesman for the Missouri Department of Transportation's office in Springfield. But, despite being ready well before the first snow falls, you can still expect your wintertime to commute to take a little longer this year because of state budget cuts. “Revenues are a problem for all state agencies, but we still plow roads,” said Edwards. Keep in mind, however, he's talking mostly about main roads. If you live on a two-lane rural road or in a neighborhood in Springfield, the snow may melt long before it's plowed. “We expect everyone to be one to two blocks away from a snow route,” said Jonathan Gano of the Springfield Public Works Department Even collector streets, which are second on the priority list to main arterials, may be snow-covered longer than you'd probably like. “That's the con of having less resources to put toward snow and ice events,” said Gano. Keeping that in mind, these snow removal experts ask you to do your part when it does finally snow. “Slow down' give yourselves extra time to get where you're going; don't make sudden movements on snow and ice,” said Edwards The city says there's enough salt to get it through the winter but, keep in mind, that's if we have a mild winter like we've seen the last several years.
