Even if battling crowds on Black Friday aren't your thing, going with the flow may be your only option if you want to wrap up everything on your Christmas list.

The reason is simple: stores don't want to end up with massive amounts of leftover merchandise like they did last year so, this holiday season, they're going conservative.

The parking lots will still be full; the lines will still be long; the deals will still be huge, but you shouldn’t plan to wait until Christmas Eve to get the deals.

"Be strategic. Don't jump on the first price but don't wait until the last minute or you may be disappointed,” said Greg Daughterty of Consumer Reports. "There is some concern this year about inventories on products, whether they'll run out, so you have to weigh the best deal with it being available at all."

It's all because retailers were stuck with massive amounts of leftover merchandise after a lackluster holiday season last year. They don't want it to happen again. So, if there is a specific item on your list, go early and be prepared to get something else instead.

"They may be out and try to sell you something more expensive. You need to know if you want it and if it's a good price,” said Daughterty.

According a to a Consumer Reports survey, big screen televisions will once again be one of the hottest selling items because they're bigger and cheaper than ever.
