Pay day loan firm uses offer of 'free gasoline' to lure customers

By Brian Vandenberg

More businesses are using the high price of gasoline as leverage to get you in the doors. Free gas can be tempting, especially when prices are as high as they are. Credit counselors say it's a dangerous trend, however.

With gas prices through the roof, consumers are having trouble paying the bills and filling up. An advertisement by a pay day loan company aims to help them do both.

Ardmore Finance Company sent out a card, offering a $20 gas card with the closing of a loan. The manager wouldn't consent to a formal interview but says his company faces tough times too. He said the gas incentive is a win/win. It gets customers in the door and customers behind the wheel.

Credit counselor Mike Cherry warns customers to think twice.

"They're looking for last little hook to get them in the door to give them a loan. These people are on edge and this is a straw to get them in and get a loan. You'll pay several hundred times what you borrow by the time you're through," said Cherry, of Consumer Credit Counseling of Southwest Missouri.

It's not just pay day loan companies. He warns customers to think hard before giving into any offer of free gas.

"If it's something you're going to buy and this is in addition to it, great. if you're doing it specifically for gas, you're paying much more for gas than $4 a gallon," he said.
