PERRIS, Calif. (KTLA) -- A 9-year-old Chihuahua named Lily has died of its injuries after being struck with a golf club in Riverside County on Thursday. Authorities say Lily died on Friday.
Lily suffered a lacerated liver, broken leg and head trauma, according to Riverside officials.
58-year-old Larry Edward Jaurequi, of Menifee, was booked for felony animal cruelty.
The incident happened around 2:15 p.m. Thursday in the area of High Ridge Circle in Perris.
Two dogs, a Chihuahua and a poodle mix, got loose while their owner was at work, and wandered into a cul-de-sac, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Dept.
Jaurequi approached the dogs with a golf club, then "swung the club against the Chihuahua as if driving a golf ball off its tee," the sheriff's officials said in a press release.
"The force of the swing sent the animal flying through the air," the release says.
Jarequi was allegedly preparing for a second swing when he was stopped by witnesses.
The owner rushed the Chihuahua to an emergency veterinarian, but the dog is not expected to survive.
Jarequi is being held on $5,000 bail.
