One-man robbery spree continues; police look for tips

By Gene Hartley

SPRINGFIELD -- A serial robber hit two more convenience stores on Tuesday night. He’s now suspected of six recent robberies in the city and police need the public’s help to put him behind bars and stop his crime spree.

One of the latest robberies was a failed attempt at the Food Mart on Republic Road. Within a matter of minutes, police say, he moved to a Fast-N-Friendly on Kansas.

“The suspect description in both those incidents, which actually took place in a short timeframe, appears to match the suspect in four other robberies we're looking at,” said Officer Grant Story, a spokesman for the Springfield Police Department.

Those robberies started Jan. 8 with a robbery at Little Caesar’s Pizza on South scenic Avenue and a robbery at the Go Convenience store on East Division Street. That's where surveillance cameras caught pictures of the man, described as white, 40-50 years old, 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-9, 150 to 170 pounds and salt & pepper colored beard and hair.

He's also been connected to robberies at a Village Mart and a Rapid Roberts, both on North Glenstone Avenue.

“Certainly, anytime we can get good clear pictures of a suspect, which on some level we have in this case, that will almost assure we'll catch the person,” said Story.

Police say this guy isn't getting away with much cash because most convenience stores limit their cash. They do want storeowners to go outside and make sure, while standing outside and looking inside, nothing blocks their view. They say robbers really look for stores where the view inside is blocked.
