Thieves steal phone cable near Fantastic Caverns

SPRINGFIELD -- Thieves climbed utility poles and stole 400 feet of copper telephone cable north of the city on Wednesday night. The cable provided telephone service to Fantastic Caverns and three dozen or so homes.

Metal prices keep climbing and copper in lines connecting rural areas is popular with thieves, who sell it scrap yards.

Fantastic Caverns was able to patch together phone service but other conveniences that tourists expect were knocked out.

AT&T is offering a $3,000 reward for information leading to the person or persons responsible for the cable theft. The number to call is 1-800-807-4205.
