VERONA, Mo. -- It's an unthinkable crime for most of us but apparently not all of us. Vandals destroyed Lee Cemetery near Verona on Halloween night. Now, its caretakers say the pressure's on to get it cleaned up quickly.
It's tough for Bill Weldy not to take it personally.
"My wife is buried down there, my son, sister,” he said.
Since Halloween night, Weldy has had to see his family cemetery in ruins.
"It's going to cost probably $2,000 to fix this back like it should be,” he said.
Weldy's family is here. His plot is here, and so is the plot for the woman he re-married 11 years ago, Dorothy.
"He has a form and he put the stone in there and put concrete around them and let them sit. And they're real heavy to move back out here and set. And they turned them over,” said Dorothy Weldy.
She says it's difficult to see Bill's handiwork -- done originally with honor and respect -- treated so callously.
The Weldys say they wouldn't mind cleaning up the cemetery themselves but the problem is some of these headstones weigh more than 800 pounds apiece, and they just won't budge.
“I don't think two people could do it. I think it took more than two to do it."
The vandals overturned, split in two, or re-arranged 75 headstones.
"The ones around the tree, we don't really know where they go."
They're hoping to get it fixed up before the next round of visitors next week on Thanksgiving.
"It's just all over."
They also pray in the meantime that no loved ones of those buried here come here to see it in this shape.
"All the holidays they come out and put flowers."
The Weldys say they could really use some help in paying for the damage to be cleaned up. If you would like to donate your *time or your money, you can call (417) 678-4892.
