Lakie may not have seen anything but, a few doors down in the 3000 block of West Village Lane, just west and south of Springfield, her neighbor saw an intruder.

"A very distinctive 6-foot-'3 black man," said Greene County Sheriff's Dept. Captain Randy Gibson.

Investigators said that man broke into the couple's apartment while they slept. One of the residents woke up and chased the burglar out of their home. An hour-long manhunt ensued. Deputies used a tracking dog but lost the scent.

"It was not a random situation. We believe the suspect or person of interest may have known one or more members of the family that reside there," said Gibson.

Random act or not, Lakie said she's worried about her own safety, being so close to the crime scene.

"That's the reason why I live in a two-story building, because I don't like to sleep on the first level in case something like that did happen," said Lakie.

She said she'll get extra locks, figuring a little more caution couldn't hurt.

The burglary early Friday could be connected to another burglary that happened last week, also south of the city limits. Investigators say the description of the suspect, a 6-foot-3' black man, was the same in both cases.
