MAMMOTH SPRING, Ark. -- Law enforcement officers in Oregon County, Mo., as well as here, just south of the state line, are investigating several, early-week burglaries in the area. The Out of the Way Café, a quaint place for a bite, was one business that was hit.

Tuesday through Saturday, the café serves breakfast and lunch. Monday night, a visitor came to the front door.

"We had to break back into the restaurant because the door was pushed in so far," said owner Tina Miano.

Along with some of the café's cash, a gallon jar was taken.

Along with the café, Miano says, the drug store here and about half-a-dozen other places around the area were broken into that same night. What sets this apart is the money taken from the café was for the Shop with a Cop program for children's Christmas presents.

"Kids shouldn't have to suffer because times are tough on Christmas; times are already hard for them, or they wouldn't be on the list," Miano said.

From $500 collected, now there's not even $50. That's about 55 cents for each of the 90 local kids in need whom Miano is trying to help.

"I've been in that situation," Miano said. "My kid hugged a six pack of socks because he never knew of anything more on Christmas."

Despite the setback, Miano remains in the holiday spirit.

"I won't press charges; just give the money back to the kids so they'll have a good memory of Christmas," she said.

If you'd like to help the Out of the Way Café, its address is 365 Main Street, Mammoth Spring, AR 72554. Its phone number is (870) 625-1234.

If you know anything about this burglary, you can call Mammoth Spring police at (870) 625-7516. Other break-ins are reported in Thayer and Alton, Mo.
