SPRINGFIELD -- Nearly a year ago, Springfield-Greene County Parks Department officials promised change after a KY3 News investigation found elevated levels of lead paint on equipment at several playgrounds. Following our investigation, the parks department said it would make removing lead-based paint a priority.

Rosha Gann is constantly on the lookout for playground hazards.

"Just to make sure equipment is up to par, that swings aren't going to break, that the slide is safe," said Gann.

But she never considered the dangers of lead-based paint on park equipment.

"If I would have known there was lead paint on equipment, I would keep children away from a park," she said.

Fortunately, it's not a concern like it was last spring when KY3 News tested paint chips from Fassnight, Grant Beach, Nichols, Phelps Grove and Zagonyi Parks, and found elevated levels of lead in every sample. Following our findings, Parks Department Director Jodie Adams committed to making the parks safer.

"It concerns us because we wouldn't want any lead exposure whatsoever but, once we find out there's something like that, we put it on our immediate list," Adams said last May.

In the last 12 months, the parks department made good on its promise. While it couldn't afford to replace every piece of equipment, it has at least repainted every piece we found with elevated levels of lead paint.

"Anytime we have equipment in disrepair, it's a priority for us," said Assistant Director Bob Belote.

Instead of simply painting layer on top of layer, like the department did in the past, parks officials renewed their efforts over the past year to completely remove all the old paint that could contain lead.

"We'll come back in, scrape that down to base metal, and repaint it with high gloss enamel paint," said Belote.

Gann says she's glad parks officials are helping to prevent the hazards that she doesn't expect on playgrounds, so she can focus on protecting her daughter from the ones that she does expect.

"To be honest I take that for granted," she said.
