SPRINGFIELD -- A pharmacy chain is taking steps to protect its customers after a rash of thefts of debit card information. Family Pharmacy isn't the only store that's been linked with these debit card data thefts but it certainly has been hit the hardest with thefts from customers at 11 or more of its 23 stores. The owner say he's doing everything possible to figure out what went wrong.
When someone robs a pharmacy, they're usually looking for drugs but Family Pharmacy customers have been robbed of much more. Somehow, someone stole customer debit card information and used it to make purchases across the country, with hundreds of victims and losses topping $750,000,
Family Pharmacy's owner Lynn Morris says, so far, he has no reason to believe it's an inside job. Morris' only theory is something went wrong with the pharmacy's new credit card system that it installed just last year.
As of June 27, the system was completely locked down and Morris thinks the hole is plugged. But, just in case, the company will spend $36,000 for a complete audit to find out what went wrong and make sure the system is safe. Morris says it's well worth it to protect his company's good name.
