Two recent tragedies on the baseball diamond have some parents wondering just how safe their kids are in what was once thought to be a relatively safe sport – baseball. According to figures nationwide, each year more than 108,000 youngsters between the ages of 5 and 14 are treated at emergency rooms for baseball or softball-related injuries. That seems like a lot but it's far less than the number for football and basketball.

However, the statistics also reveal that kids in that same age group are seven times more likely to get hit by a batted ball than older players because they're less coordinated and less attentive.
