OCEANSIDE, Calif. -- A former Oceanside High School football standout was killed and a second male was injured in a predawn shooting in Oceanside Saturday, police said.
The two men were shot just before 5 a.m., in the 1700 block of Kraft Street, near North Canyon Drive, according to Oceanside Police Captain Leonard Mata.
Justin Nonu, 22, was standing with four others in the driveway of a residence when an unidentified male opened fire on the group from the opposite side of the street, police said.
"Obviously, it's a tragic event. We don't know what happened and we don't know why it happened, but we're going to try and find the people who committed this crime," said Capt. Mata.
The suspect ran or walked west on Kraft Street and was only described as wearing dark colored clothing. Police do not have any suspects and are asking for the public's help.
"Maybe there are witnesses or somebody heard the gunfire or saw someone running from the scene," said Capt. Mata. "We want that information to come forward so we can further our investigation."
The name of the wounded person was not released, but investigators said he refused medical treatment.
Police said Nonu had graduated as a standout football player from Oceanside High School in 2006 and attended the University of Colorado.
