SHIRLEY, MA -- An 8-year old pit bull is being credited saving her owner's life when the woman collapsed on train tracks during a late-night walk.

Veterinarians say 'Lily' used her teeth to drag Christine Spain off the tracks as the train approached.

The train's engineer says he tried to stop the train in time, and while he missed 54-year old Spain, Lily lost her right front leg.

An animal control officer rushed Lilly to an emergency animal hospital.

'Llily,' a rescue dog, underwent two surgeries at the Angell Animal Medical Center.

Steel plates were implanted to repair her fractured pelvis and support her left leg.

Angell spokesman Rob Halpin said Lilly's doctors expect she'll be able to walk again.

Spain was arrested on the scene on charges of obstruction and danger on a railroad track, walking on a railroad track and animal cruelty.
