BAJA CALIFORNIA -- After strangling 8-year-old David Lizárraga Gómez, stuffing his body into a suitcase and dumping his body in a nearby lot, the boy's confessed killer says he then joined neighbors searching for the child.

19-year old José Rubén Quintero Mariscal says he killed the boy “out of impulse,” and joined the search because “I felt guilty, I didn't know how to make things right.”

Quintero told police the boy came to his door Saturday afternoon, asking for an aluminum can.

After inviting David inside, Quintero told police he decided to sexually molest him.

When the boy resisted, Quintero wrapped a shirt around his neck until he stopped breathing, fearing he would report him, authorities said.

The boy's body was found Monday afternoon – about 48 hours after his disappearance – on a weed-covered lot behind the apartment complex where he and Quintero lived.

The youngster's body was found stuffed inside a suitcase.

Quintero is a U.S. citizen, born in San Diego, but U.S. Consular officials in Tijuana say they are trying to determine Quintero's citizenship.

U.S. officials confirmed David was a U.S. citizen, though he lived with his mother in Tijuana.

Investigators issued an Ambert Alert - the first in Mexico - when the boy disappeared from his home's patio Saturday.
