Early Thursday morning, a newborn baby was found by a woman in Ellisville, Missouri. The woman thought that she'd heard the cries of puppies and called the police.  But after the police arrived on the scene, it was discovered that the cries were in fact a newborn baby wrapped in a blanket and left outside next to a home.

Neighbors gave the police clean towels to wrap the baby in while waiting for an EMS unit.  The baby was transported to Mercy Hospital, where the child is listed in stable condition.

Police say the mother of the baby was found at a local hospital. The 19-year-old woman is still hospitalized and being interviewed by detectives. No word yet if charges will be filed.

Authorities say the baby's umbilical cord had been cut, but not tied off. They're also saying this could have all been avoided; the mom could have dropped the baby off at a safe place, such as a fire station or police station.  Under Missouri law, no questions would have been asked and the baby would have been put into DFS custody.

Ellisville police say they’ve been told the 6 lb, blonde-haired baby boy is doing well.
