WALNUT GROVE, Mo. -- A fire destroyed a home on Farm Road 34 late Monday night.  It started just before midnight.  Firefighters say the family dog and the smoke alarm woke everyone up, helping the family get out alive.

Five departments joined together to fight the fire, but the location of the home was a challenge for firefighters, trucks and tankers.

"You got some single-lane roads and things you gota deal with, and so the house is kinda a little ways back," Willard assistant fire chief Kelly Davis said. "So we had to bring in lines from the road down, so we've got water operation going from the front and going down here to these trucks down here."

Firefighters are trying to put out hot spots before they can start their investigation into what started it. The family is safe, but the home is a complete loss.
