NIXA, Mo. -- This Sunday's Super Bowl kicks off a pair of firsts. It's the first time the game will be played in Indianapolis, and it marks a milestone for an eatery in Nixa. Bud and Walt's is a restaurant with strong Christian ties that will hold its first Super Bowl party on Sunday at 4.
The reason it has never held a Super Bowl party until now is the restaurant never had a liquor license before, and the owner just didn't think many people would show up for a Super Bowl party.
Bud and Walt's donates 50 percent of its net profits to Christian missions. Managing partner Leon Fisher worked in Russia as a missionary for a dozen years. When he came back to the States, Fisher wanted to continue spreading the word, so he now does that a slice at a time.
Fisher says the owners decided to add bottled beer to the menu after getting numerous requests from customers.
"We're a Christian-owned restaurant and half of our profits still go to support missions, but we had people requesting that we have beer, and we looked into it and decided to serve bottled beer. No draft, no bar, no beer signs hanging -- we're family-oriented and have cartoons playing here all the time and we're going to continue to do that," said Fisher.
The restaurant started serving bottled beer on Jan. 1. Its Super Bowl party starts Sunday at 4; they'll have pizza discounts for the party.
