SPRINGFIELD -- Greene County is launching a new discount program to help cut the cost of prescriptions. County commissioners will unveil the program at a news conference on Wednesday afternoon.

The county commission says the idea of the Greene County Rx Prescription Discount Cards program is to cut the cost of drugs by an average of 20 percent. The program is through the National Association of Counties (NACo), a non-profit organization representing about 3,000 counties. Greene County is only the second in Missouri to agree to participate in the Rx program. The other is Boone County, where it's getting good reviews.

The cards will be available at no cost in health clinics, senior centers and libraries, and can be used by all Greene County residents, regardless of age, income or health insurance.

NACo partnered with Caremark Rx to offer the program at no cost to its member counties and at no cost to county taxpayers. The county commission says more than 70 pharmacies in Greene County will honor the discount cards, in addition to more than 57,000 pharmacies nationwide.
