SPRINGFIELD -- Some kinks surfaced Thursday with the new prescription drug discount card being offered to Greene County residents. The problem is some pharmacies aren't up to speed on the program.

With no insurance, Cheryl Idson picked up a discount card hoping it would cut the cost of her blood pressure medication. But, when she took it to the CVS store on Glenstone Avenue, she wasn't able to find out if it would help her.

"I presented the card to them and they told me, 'what's this?'" said Idson.

A supervisor with the store says employees didn't know anything about the card or the new program, and are waiting to hear from corporate headquarters to learn more. The oddest thing about this is CVS owns CareMark, the company responsible for administering the cards.

Idson wasn't able to even check for a discount.

"They didn't know what to do or anything," she said.

But county officials say her case is an isolated incident. Still, a county spokeswoman says part of the problem may be that CareMark negotiated this deal years ago with the National Association of Counties.

Managers of several smaller pharmacies said in interviews that they weren't notified individually about the pending program. The Greene County Commission says it's taking a wait-and-see approach to determine if it needs to make personal contacts with each pharmacy.

And to think, all Idson wanted to do was try to save a few bucks.
