On any given weekend you can find Nila and Everett Hayes enjoying Table Rock Lake, "We spend a lot of time on the lake early in the spring all summer and as late into fall as we can and it's such great entertainment." Usually the Everett's are goofing around, but on this day they're giving back. They're volunteering for the annual fall cleanup at the lake.

"It looks trashy unless we keep it clean some of the things we picked up today would just continue to accumulate and it would be unsightly to come out here and enjoy," said the Hayes.

Nearly everything they and other volunteers collect at the end of boating season is styrofoam, which breaks off docks and clogs the waterway and shoreline.

"It's used as flotation for the boat-docks around the lake and sometimes if it gets stormy or if it gets warn out or maintained they'll break loose and wash up on the shore somewhere," said Gopala Borchelt, Projects Director of Table Rock Lake Quality.

The fall trash pickup around the lake is dubbed a mini cleanup, but it doesn't look that way once volunteers have collected mounds and piles of styrofoam.

A feat the Hayes say they're not only proud to help out with, but they also encourage others to do the same, " If you can do something to help keep it clean and nicer that just seems to be the logical thing to do," said Everett Hayes. During this year's spring cleanup, volunteers filled a thousand bags with trash and foam.
