Dolly Parton visits West Plains music legend

By Gene Hartley

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A television station in Nashville reports country music legend Dolly Parton visited Grand Ol' Opry star and West Plains, Mo., native Porter Wagoner on Friday. Wagoner is hospitalized in serious condition.

Parton said Wagoner was in good spirits and wanted to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers. Wagoner told Parton that he's looking forward to getting better and being back on the Opry. Parton said she promised to sing with him his first night back.

Representatives of Wagoner had said he "is asking for prayers from his friends and fans." Wagoner, 80, is in intensive care and listed in serious condition.

The singer is known for his rhinestone stage outfits and helping launch Parton's career by hiring her as his duet partner in 1967. In May, he celebrated his 50th year on the Opry, the long-running live country music stage and radio show in Nashville.

Wagoner's career took an upturn this year when he signed with ANTI-records, an eclectic Los Angeles label best known for alt-rock acts like Tom Waits, Nick Cave and Neko Case. He and partner Marty Stuart released the CD "Wagonmaster," earning Wagoner some of the best reviews of his career.

Over the summer, he was the opening act for the White Stripes at a sold-out show at Madison Square Garden.

Wagoner was hospitalized for two weeks in July 2006 after suffering a stomach aneurysm.

Fans can send well wishes to: Porter Wagoner, c/o The Grand Ole Opry, 2802 Opryland Drive, Nashville, TN 37214
