HOUSTON, Mo. -- The Texas County Sheriff’s Department is on the lookout for a stolen all-terrain vehicle and its 18-foot trailer. Both disappeared on Sunday night after being parked beside a highway near Success.

The ATV is a green 2005 Polaris Ranger. Detectives think the thieves stacked hay from a nearby barn on the trailer and left with it.

Law officers worry that thefts of ATVs will increase during the modern firearms deer hunting season that opens Saturday. People in Texas County report 20 stolen ATVs last year and there were 200 stolen in a six-county area, and most were not recovered.

In the theft near Success, the thieves pushed the Ranger through a field, cut a fence to gain access to the highway, loaded the Ranger on the stolen flatbed trailer, and then covered it with square bales of hay to hide it.

There's a reward for information that leads to the recovery of the Ranger.
