Off-roading ranch raises roars in Webster County

SEYMOUR, Mo. -- So what do you do on weekends? Watch football? Work in the yard? Go to the mall? Read a book? While you're doing that and having fun, some of your neighbors are having extreme fun here in southern Webster County.

Talk about extreme! This is about as extreme as off- roading (driving over challenging terrain in a four-wheel-drive vehicle) gets.

Consider this. One waterfall ledge at the Southern Missouri Off Road Ranch is 8- or 9-feet high.

First, we crawled the front end of our Jeep up. Then we got it into position and tried to power up. We almost made it -- and almost flipped over. On the second try, we had more success.

The Southern Missouri Off Road Ranch has more than 900 acres of rocks, hills and rigs.

“We say this is the most fun you can have at 3 miles per hour. Now, we do get faster than 3 miles per hour for moments but usually just a little bit,” said Brandon Powell, co-owner of the ranch.

This is where off-road warriors gather on weekends with their extreme machinery to get in touch with nature. It's a massive play land for boys of all ages – and, yes, girls, too.

“My parents and some people can't believe I do it but it's a lot of fun,” said off-roader Johna Hart.

Most of our day at the ranch was spent in the shotgun seat with Powell, in his rig, Juggy.

“I found this rig on eBay and bought it for a good deal,” said Powell.

Powell is an experienced driver, and co-owner of the ranch known as SMORR. Passionate about four-wheeling, he's always thinking strategy when he sees a tough climb.

“Well, I'm looking for a line,” he laughed, “looking for a line and the line is a way to get up it.”

But, of course, once you make it up, you have to go down.

You should know that not all the trails out here are this extreme.

“It's as extreme as you want it to be,” said Powell. “I would invite any novice to come out and give it a try because we have trails to start out on that I could take my stock four-wheel drive pickup on.

“I try to advise them, especially if they're new, tell them what trails to run by looking at their vehicle. A stock jeep can do great out here.”

And women do great out there, too. While we were at the ranch, I rode along as Hart made some history.

“It's a pretty big drop off. I've never done it before,” said Hart.

I wondered if she was nervous.

“A little bit but I can do it,” she said.

I put my faith in her. With that, she became the first woman to drive off Doe Skid -- a thrilling, and extreme way to end what could have been an ordinary Saturday.

We had a great day. The people are wonderful and it’s great place to take a family. It’s fun and inexpensive -- $15 a day for the vehicle and a driver, then $5 for each extra person.

The ranch is open every other weekend.

We want to know if you have or know of an extreme hobby here in the Ozarks. I'd love to profile it. Send me pictures and ideas at eforhetz@ky3.com and maybe we'll do a story about how others have extreme fun.
