REPUBLIC, Mo. – There’s major damage here, where there's been damage to homes, businesses, and the roof has blown off one school. The calm quickly turned chaotic on Monday night.
A driver left her car on Missouri 174, running for shelter fearing a tornado.
Down the road, police blocked the entrance from Missouri 174 onto Boston Lane because of downed power lines. At first, Chase Mills just gave us a hint of the damage we couldn't see.
“We were in the bathtub, house shook, we saw it come by the high school,” said Mills.
Bill Mulholland took a KY3 News reporter and photographer around the back way off Boston Lane into the gated community of The Cottages. On Evergreen Avenue, two homes lost their roofs. Neighbors say one family had a trailer in the driveway that flipped across the street, and smashed into a garage. On other homes, garage doors are bent, mailboxes are uprooted, and siding is ripped away.
The subdivision butts up to an elementary school. This is where the storm started, peeling the roof off the 5th grade (west) wing, flooding hallways, damaging computers in the computer lab.
The Republic School District has canceled classes on Tuesday because of the damage to schools and homes. The superintendent says faculty and staff should report to work to help with the cleanup.
