Soldier's wife is accused of starving baby to death at Fort Leonard Wood

By Gene Hartley

SPRINGFIELD -- The wife of a soldier is accused of killing her 11-month-old daughter at Fort Leonard Wood by starving her last month. Kristin Phillps' husband was in Iraq at the time their daughter, Alexis, died but the U.S. attorney's office says he has since returned to Fort Wood.

Phillips is charged with murder in U.S. District Court since the girl's death occurred on a federal installation. A spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office says Phillips could get a life prison sentence or a death penalty if she's convicted.

According to an affidavit filed with the charge, Emergency Medical Services and Military Police got two 911 calls to go to Phillips' home on the night of Feb. 21. They found Alexis dead and lying in her mother's arms. An ambulance took the mother and baby to a hospital but doctors were not able to revive the baby.

Three other children were in the home -- a 2-year-old boy, a 5-year-old girl and a 14-year-old girl. They are now in the custody of the Children's Division of the Missouri Department of Social Services.
