Stolen drugs may have caused overdose death

By Brian Vandenberg

ROGERSVILLE, Mo. -- A man from Rogersville died after overdosing on prescription pain pills that police believe may have been stolen. Police say a male in his 20s broke into a pharmacy and stole 1,500 pills of percocet and oxycontin, highly addictive pain killers that may have ultimately killed another man.

Police say the burglar was able to cut a hole through the wall of a vacant adjoining unit to grab the pills. Another man was found dead from an overdose of percocet two days after the burglary, and police see a connection.

Police believe the burglar left the area once he found out about the death. The man likely will face burglary charges but officers say involuntary manslaughter charges might be a stretch because of the burden of proof.

The Rogersville police chief says the Webster County prosecuting attorney could have a request for an arrest warrant prepared this week.
