EVERTON, Mo. -- A 16-year-old boy from Lockwood drowned Monday in the flooded Turnback Creek at Fiddler Ford's Conservation Department access area. Search crews looked for Collin Hardenberger’s body on Monday afternoon but called off the search at sunset.

The search resumed Tuesday near Everton and ended again at dark without success. The Dade County sheriff says they'll try again on Wednesday.

The Missouri State Water Patrol says Hardenberger and two friends -- Perry Ellis and Ray Suniga, both of Greenfield -- launched a canoe at Four Ott Corners Post and were floating to Fiddler's Ford. About 200 yards from the takeout point at Fiddler's Ford, the canoe hit a log and capsized.

One friend swam to shore. Hardenberger and the other friend grabbed onto the canoe and floated it downstream about 200 yards. At that point, the two decided to let go and swim to shore. The friend had just about made it to shore when he heard Hardenberger yell his name. He looked but Hardenberger was gone.
