Missouri lawmakers claim insurers target travelers

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Senators endorsed a measure that would limit the ability of life insurance companies to deny coverage or to hike rates based on a person's travel plans.

The sponsor, Sen. Scott Rupp, R-Wentzville, says some Missourians have been denied life insurance policies because they planned to vacation in certain parts of the world. He says some insurance companies, for example, view Israel as dangerous.

The legislation given initial Senate approval on Thursday would prohibit insurers from denying coverage or charging different rates based on a person's past or planned travel destinations. It would create an exception for insurers that could prove there was a greater risk in going to a certain place.

Several states have passed similar measures.
