Springfield School District considers notification system

By Michelle Leroux

In just a few months, parents of Springfield students could receive a phone call if school is canceled for an emergency, or even if their child has missed a class. The district is looking at putting a notification system in place by the fall.

If everything goes through, parents could be contacted by phone, e-mail, or text message.

The system would work not only in emergency situations, but might also help in other ways. Associate Superintendent Dr. Peggy Riggs says, "All three companies that presented to us talked about an immediate increase in attendance which would be very helpful and beneficial for us."

The funding for the program would come from an existing Safe Schools Healthy Students grant. Those dollars would fund the program for one year. If it's successful, the schools would have to decide how to pay for the program after that first year.
