Soggy spring soaks fields and farmers' potential profits

STARK CITY, Mo. -- Farmers are worried that continued heavy downpours could eventually start soaking up their profits. A lot of flat fields in the western Ozarks should be knee high in corn but all this rain has forced farmers to plant late.

Soybeans and corn are high priced commodities right now but Kip Cullers is having a tough time getting his crops planted because of all the rain. He just planted corn last week on his farm east of Neosho and already has 400 to 500 acres submerged in water. Those drenched crops most likely will die.

“I'd say about all farmers are hurting pretty bad because it's raining because in southwest Missouri we don't know if it's going to get cold in the spring but we know it's going to get hot in the summer and we want to try to get out early as we can and try to beat the summer heat,” said Cullers.

Cullers set the world record for soybean yield on his farm the past two years. (He harvested 154.74 bushels per acre in 2007, breaking his record of 139.39 bushels per acre in 2006 on the same 40-acre field. The previous record was about 118 bushels per acre. He also was a top finisher in the National Corn Growers Association Yield Contest in 2007.)

He would like to set another record this year but doesn't see that happening because he still can’t plant his crop because of the rain.

Every day that farmers can't plant costs them money. Cullers' biggest worry is a wet spring and a hot, dry summer. That delay in planting would push the crops’ pollination stage into the summer when it's hot and dry, resulting in a smaller harvest and higher costs because of fertilizer prices.
