Springfield police think woman lied about attack at apartment complex

By Gene Hartley

SPRINGFIELD -- After a thorough investigation, city police believe a woman fabricated her recent account of an attack in the Lake Shore apartment complex.

On April 28, a woman told police that she fought off an attack in her apartment late that evening. The 34-year-old woman claimed she was inside her apartment at 3660 S. Cox Ave. when she saw an unknown man enter through an unlocked door. The woman reported a violent struggle between herself and the man.

After speaking with many witnesses and closely examining the evidence at the crime scene, police now believe the attack didn't occur. Subsequent interviews with the woman confirmed that suspicion.

Presumably, this report caused many other residents in that area to fear for their safety. Also, police spent many hours investigating the incident, believing the initial report to be legitimate. Considering the impact to the community and its resources, investigation into the incident is ongoing and charges may be filed against the woman who made the false police report.
