UNION, Mo. -- A woman who slashed a young mother's throat, kidnapped her newborn and passed off the child as her own for five days entered an Alford plea on Friday. That means Shannon Torrez of Lonedell doesn’t admit guilt but concedes prosecutors have enough evidence to convict her of child kidnapping, armed criminal action and first-degree assault.

A sentencing hearing is set for May 27 in Franklin County Circuit Court. Both sides will be able to present testimony about what Torrez' punishment should be.

Investigators say the 38-year-old woman attacked Stephenie Ochsenbine, then 21, in 2006 and left with Ochsenbine's week-old baby, Abby Woods. The kidnapping unraveled when Torrez’ sister-in-law became suspicious and alerted police.
