SPRINGFIELD -- The former head of security at the Greene County Judicial Courts Facility is charged with assaulting a woman by pointing an electric stun gun at her and shining its red laser aiming light on her. The prosecuting attorney charged Robert Green with third-degree assault, a misdemeanor, on Friday.

According to a probable cause statement, the incident was April 8 following a joking exchange at the security entrance to the courts building. Tiffany Adamson, an employee of a law firm, said Green drew his stun gun from its holster and pointed it at her. Adamson said she raised her hands and saw the laser light on her left breast and stomach.

Green was a 19-year Greene County sheriff’s deputy. He resigned last month after other deputies started investigating what he did. Chief Deputy Jim Arnott said pointing a weapon at someone in a joking manner is a violation of department policy.

If convicted, Green could face a jail sentence up to 15 days and/or a fine up to $300. Prosecutors won’t have to prove that Green made physical contact with Adamson to get a conviction. Instead, all they have to show is the victim was in “apprehension of immediate physical injury.” According to the probable cause statement, Adamson told a detective that she felt “trapped, detained, threatened” and felt like she couldn’t move when the stun gun was pointed at her.
