MARSHFIELD, Mo. -- A suspended Fordland police officer is charged with raping a 14-year-old girl. The Webster County prosecuting attorney charged Earl Thompson last week with forcible rape.
"It's always a sad day when a law enforcement officer has to take into custody another officer. It sheds a bad light probably on all of us,” said Webster County Sheriff’s Department Detective John Everett.
The Fordland Police Department is one officer down. Police Chief James Cervi suspended and put Thompson on administrative leave after the sheriff's department got a complaint about Thompson from the girl's mother and stepfather.
Thompson is accused of raping the girl twice, once about April 26 and another time when the girl can't recall the date after they went out to eat together. On the first occasion, the girl told a detective, Thompson ripped off her t-shirt and sent her home in other clothes after they had intercourse.
"He had been a family friend for some time and they had spent some time together,” said Everett.
According to the probable cause statement filed with the charge, the teenager "asked him to stop, but says he wouldn't." It also says Thompson told the girl to "let it go," or else she would never see her parents again.
The victim’s father told detectives that his stepdaughter came out of school with her cellular telephone. He says he noticed it had several text messages from the 42-year-old officer. One of them said, "I luv you" and included a heart next to the message.
The stepfather said he questioned the girl and she started crying and admitted she and the officer "went all the way," the probable cause statement says.
Everett also wrote that he found another text message on the girl's cell phone said, "I wish I was but ur parents r pickn u up. I love you baby."
"I'm not real impressed hearing it, especially having kids of my own,” said Ival Stinnett, a Fordland resident.
Stinnett says the charges are disheartening but even more so because the man charged with breaking the law is a man also charged with upholding it.
"Do you want your kids to go out when law enforcement can do stuff like that, let alone anybody else out on the street,” said Stinnett.
Thompson won't be there for a while.
"We have to uphold the law no matter who it is that breaks the law,” said Everett.
The girl told detectives that the rapes were at Thompson's home at 383B Peach Tree Street in Fordland while he was off duty.
Thompson posted a $100,000 bond on Friday and waived his first court appearance on the charge on Monday. Another hearing is scheduled for June 2.
