MoDOT finds money for more widening of U.S. 65 in Springfield by 2013

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- The Missouri Department of Transportation projects it will have more money that previously thought for construction projects in the next five years. As a result, MoDOT proposes three major projects in the KY3 area, and 10 more major projects in the rest of the state.

The new projects are part of MoDOT’s proposed 2009-2013 transportation improvement program. The 13 new projects would cost about $300 million. MoDOT says they’re possible because of lower than expected interest rates on money it borrows, plus savings from using a process called Practical Design as well as matching funds provided by local governments.

The three new projects in the KY3 area are adding passing lanes to U.S. 60 between Monett and Republic, at a cost of $25 million; adding a third lane in each direction on U.S. 65 between Battlefield Road and Chestnut Expressway in Springfield, $16 million; and widening and improving Missouri 13 between Branson West and Kimberling City, $24 million.

MoDOT says, without additional funding, this will be the last round of major construction projects for many years because its funds will have to be spent on maintaining existing roads and repaying the money that it’s borrowed the last few years to speed up major projects. Instead of spending an average of $1.23 billion per year on construction, MoDOT estimates it will have about $575 million each year starting July 1, 2013.

After receiving public comments on the proposed five-year construction plan, the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission could vote on it on July 2.
