Purdy seniors graduate after tornado postponed first ceremony

By Brian Vandenberg

Postponing graduation was one precaution taken by the Purdy School District on Saturday night. That's why Wednesday's rescheduled ceremony will go down in history.

It's the moment all high school seniors look forward to since they were knee-high. For the Purdy Eagles class of 2008, graduation day would be even more memorable. These students were supposed to graduate on Saturday, but Mother Nature had other plans.

An EF2 tornado blew through the small town. Gloria Veith, who was here to see her grandson graduate, says people used their cell phone lights to guide them into the hallways where they hunkered down until it was safe to leave.

Everyone made it out of the school unscathed, though somewhat disappointed. So here they were four days later, donned in their caps and gowns, eager to embrace the grownup world.

As the years go by and they have children and grandchildren, they can tell them about the night the lights when out on graduation day.
