Church in Springfield offers cheap gas on Saturday morning.

By Gene Hartley

SPRINGFIELD -- A church will roll back gas prices on Saturday morning as a community outreach project. North Point Church is selling gas for just $2.42 a gallon at the Conoco station at Chestnut Expressway at Benton Avenue for just 52 minutes, starting at 10 a.m.

Fifty-two is the number of Sundays in each year. The church will spend at least $10,000 to pass along savings to anyone who shows up.

Pastor Tommy Sparger was asked why the church is doing this.

"Why not is the better question," he said. "If we're not supposed to be helping people, I don't know what we're supposed to be doing. "

One warning: drivers won't be able to pull into the station parking lot. Flaggers will wave drivers to a staging area, where they'll wait their turn at the pump.
