Governor asks for federal aid for tornado-damaged areas

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Gov. Matt Blunt asked President Bush for two Disaster Declarations for both Individual Assistance and Public Assistance for Clay, Douglas and Jackson counties impacted by tornadoes on May 2, and Barry, Jasper and Newton counties impacted by tornadoes on May 10.

The tornadoes on May 10 caused 16 deaths and more than 200 storm related injuries, in addition to leaving 9,000 customers without power in Barry, Jasper and Newton counties.

Federal and state assessment teams found more than 550 damaged homes in the three counties. They also found 154 homes that were destroyed and 58 homes that had major damage. The teams also identified $6.2 million in costs to public infrastructure.

As a result of the tornadoes on May 2, teams identified 82 homes that were destroyed or that had major damage and more than 1,800 homes that were affected in Clay, Douglas and Jackson counties, including in Ava and near Goodhope southwest of Ava. The teams identified $2.5 million in costs to public infrastructure.
