SPRINGFIELD -- Change is coming to some speed limits on city streets. The speed limits will go up instead of down.

"If a lot of folks are going faster than the speed limit, I don't think it's necessarily the fact that they're speeding so much as the fact that our speed limit is probably too low," said city Traffic Engineer Earl Newman. "Officers are doing what they do for safety and no other reason." said Police Chief Lynn Rowe.

We pored through data from all 11,000 speeding tickets written last year to find out when and where they're being written. On Friday, we showed them to Newman, who helps determine speed limits.

"This is the first time; we've never done this kind of analysis," he said.

We made maps to show areas where cops write the most tickets. One of those areas is Walnut Lawn Street between Kansas Expressway and Campbell Avenue. What seemed odd is this stretch is a fairly new four-lane divided road but the speed limit is only 35 miles per hour.

That caught the attention of city traffic engineers also, and it's going to be changed.

"Based upon what we see with so many drivers over the speed limit we've posted, and they're just driving to the conditions of the road, we need to make an adjustment," said Newman.

So look for the speed limit to jump five miles per hour here in the next couple of weeks.

Another area where police find a lot of speeders is Campbell north of Sunshine to Grand, near Parkview High School.

"We've been thinking about that for some time," said Newman.

Northbound, the speed limit drops from 40 to 30 miles per hour.

"Our speed survey shows a large majority of people are going above 30," said Newman.

So look for 35 there too. And it could be just the beginning.

"We're reviewing constantly and, obviously, you've given us a few more to look at that we didn't have on our radar, so we'll look at those and there may be more coming," said Newman.
