Man is charged for fatal stabbing in Springfield

By Michelle Leroux

SPRINGFIELD -- A man from Springfield is charged with stabbing an acquaintance to death early Sunday morning. Greene County prosecutors charged William Alspaugh with second-degree murder and armed criminal action on Monday morning.

Dwight Scott, 34, of Springfield died at a hospital on Sunday after being stabbed in the chest at 626 N. Kansas Expressway. Someone called police to that address just before 6 a.m. Sunday.

An ambulance took Scott to a hospital but doctors were not able to save him.

Officers arrested and interviewed Alspaugh on Sunday, as well as other witnesses. A police department spokesman declined to say what detectives believe led Alspaugh to stab Scott. Officer Grant Story said alcohol was not involved.

Alpaugh was in the Greene County jail on Monday in lieu of a $150,000 bond.
